Ketosis may prove as a problem for the dieters following the hCG Diet. Ketosis refers to the state of increased levels of ketones in the body. Ketones form by ketogenesis; this occurs when an individual reduces their consumption of carbohydrates, therefore eliminating their liver glycogen stores. When fuel from carbohydrates drops drastically, the body is then required to survive off of protein and fat, which results in the release of ketones.

Given the fact that the hCG Diet requires a very low caloric consumption, this can trigger ketogensis. When natural glycogen stores are reduced in the liver through this rigid caloric method of dieting, the body does not receive enough carbohydrates to use as energy; this is how the body derives off of unwanted fat deposits and muscle tissue.

If a dieter does not adhere to the protocol guidelines of the hCG Diet and make proper use of the hCG hormone supplement, they may be at higher risk of developing ketosis. Ketosis will result in the dieter feeling fatigued and deprived due to the lack of glucose in the body; this could render long term damage.

A primary symptom of ketosis is fruity, sweet smelling breath. Other symptoms include weakness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, a metallic taste in the mouth and gastrointestinal upset. While the sweet breath of the mouth is the number one sign of ketosis, other methods may be utilized to determine if one has developed ketosis; many online stores and health stores offer pH testing strips which can monitor and test the body for ketosis. When ketone bodies increase, the body will produce a higher acidic level which will be identified through a hP testing strip.

Avoiding ketosis while following the hCG Diet is not a difficult task. If a dieter remains certain they follow the protocol thoroughly and take their hCG supplement faithfully, chances of ketosis development are nearly eliminated. The hCG works to maintain lean muscle mass and helps the dieter to remain satisfied.

To further reduce running the risk of developing ketosis, a dieter should maintain hydration; drinking adequate amounts of water will avoid the trigger of ketosis as water acts as a natural cleanse and detoxification, eliminating waste and toxins. Water also helps to improve metabolic processes and allows the body to effectively burn off abnormal fat deposits.

Additionally, when following the very low calorie diet, dieters should balance out their caloric intake throughout the day, eating every couple of hours. This will also reduce the risk glucose levels dropping unfavorably. Eating small meals throughout the day will maintain proper blood sugar levels, as well as keep hunger pangs at bay.

Finally, if a dieter notices a metal taste developing in their mouth; it may be a signal that their liver is being overworked. In this situation, it is recommended that the dieter adds a Kelp supplement to their diet to help flush out toxins that may be inhibiting proper liver functioning.
